Racing enjoys immense popularity for many reasons. Racing fans love viewing the spectacle of one of nature's most efficient and graceful animals speeding around the track. These fans also enjoy the challenge of matching wits with each other in a contest every race to try and select the winners. This direct participation in the action on the track adds an element of drama and anticipation to the first-run performances starring the magnificent greyhounds.

Greyhounds love to race. This breed hunts by sight, not scent, so they enjoy chasing the moving mechanical lure. The lure is two wind socks attached to a bar that travels around the track. The lure makes a squeaky noise as it circles the track and the greyhounds chase the lure by sight and by sound. They wear muzzles while racing to help racing officials determine the outcome of a photo-finish race, and to protect the greyhounds from injury.

The components of the racing surface in the United States are sand, silt, clay & water.  The particles are defined by size: Clay (< 0.002 mm); Silt (0.002 - 0.05 mm); and Sand (0.05 - 2.0 mm).  The ratio of these components will determine how that track absorbs the paw. The proper ratio will provide a safe racing surface (a).  A wet track or one with too much water (b) will not provide proper traction and impact absorption.  A dry track that is composed of too much sand will produce a loose track (c).  A dry track that is low on sand content will produce a hard track.  Samples are taken from the track to assess the content ratio.
